Abstract
Laminated SiCw/SiC ceramic composites were prepared by chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) and tape casting, and the effect of heat treatment on mechanical properties of the composites was investigated. By heat-treatment of the whiskers at 1700°C, tensile strength, flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composites were increased obviously. The treatment decreased surface roughness and surface oxygen content of the whiskers, the former increased the strength and the latter increased the toughness. More crack deflection, crack bridging and whisker pull-out were observed on the fracture surface. High-temperature flexural strength of laminated SiCw/SiC ceramic composites decreased slowly above 1500°C in vacuum atmosphere due to the failure interface of whisker/matrix.
