Abstract

'Strengthening Cancer Care' was a project initiated by the Scottish Office Department of Health which sought, by using an action research model, to empower nurses working with cancer patients to initiate projects in areas of relevance and interest to them. The processes used to do this are reported in this paper and the appropriateness of using action research is confirmed. The success of this exercise in staff empowerment can be attributed to the support given to participants by their managements for the duration of the main project, which resulted in their commitment to ensuring they achieved their aims.
