Abstract

Laminated Ti–N alloy consisting of hard N-rich interfacial layers and soft Ti matrix layers has been fabricated successfully by spark plasma sintering (SPS) with stacking nitrided commercially pure (CP) Ti foils. It shows 100% higher tensile/bending strength and 25%~66% higher fracture toughness than the laminated Ti prepared by the same SPS processing with stacking CP Ti foils for comparison. Multiple strengthening and toughening mechanisms have been found to take responsibility for the good performance of the laminated Ti–N.
