Abstract

I felt moved to reply to Kiera Jones’ article (perspectives March 17) about visiting a terminally ill patient. I am a sister in a day hospice. Ms Jones echoes many nurses’ views that it would have been unprofessional to cry. I would seriously question my place in palliative care if I felt I had lost my compassion. Admitting to vulnerability can be a great strength. Ms Jones must continue to care, continue to learn and remember life is a continual mystery. The best you can hope for is to accompany patients on their journey, maintain their sense of hope and recognise ‘being with’ is as important as ‘doing to’.
