Abstract

This work applies a meshless method, the Natural Neighbours Radial Point Interpolation Method (NNRPIM), to a multi material structure composed of an anisotropic material, the composite substrates, and an isotropic material, the adhesive bonding the substrates. The strength predictions in this work were made using a recent continuum mechanics based criterion, the Critical Longitudinal Strain (CLS) criterion. The validity of the NNRPIM in this type of problem was proven by comparing it to the commonly used FEM, and the stress distributions for both numerical methods were similar. The CLS criterion proved to be accurate for the brittle Araldite®AV138, but when applied to the ductile adhesives used in this work, Araldite®2015 and Sikaforce®7888, the CLS criterion showed some limitations.
