Abstract

A strength model, which considers the effect of under-matched and the softened HAZ zone, is proposed based on the combination of theoretical and finite element analysis on 798 specimens. The comparison between test data, predicted results by Eurocode 3 (EC3) and those by the calculation formula indicates that the predictions from the proposed strength model provide reasonable agreement with test data across a range of parameters (mismatch ratio, the width of softened HAZ zone, relative width of the plate), whereas EC3 overestimates the capacity of butt joints in situations with a wide softened HAZ zone. In addition, a new design formula for butt joints considering the constraint effect on under-matched and softened zone is proposed. Based on reliability analysis, the safety indices provided by the proposed calculation formula and design formula are higher than the target value of 4.5 with a resistance factor of 0.72.
