Abstract
This review provides a brief historical outline of the development of research on fatigue strength. Basic attention is focused on studies of the strength, longevity, and failure of metallic materials and structural components under cyclic loads, which have been conducted at the S. P. Timoshenko Mechanics Institute, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine during the years of its existence. Developments of related organizations are touched upon briefly only to that degree in which they are associated with the problems under consideration.
