Abstract

Abstract IS 456:2000 provides the guideline for RC column design and IS 13920:2016 provides the guideline for ductile design and detailing of RC columns to be provided in buildings to be constructed in seismic zones. The confining steel is provided to achieve the desired ductility in RC columns. The constitutive law under monotonic axial compression is proposed by researchers for confined concrete. It gives larger stress and strain values compared to those given by the constitutive law as adopted by IS 456:2000. The RC column capacity in terms of Pu-Mu interaction curve is evaluated for confined RC column using Mander et al. model of confined concrete. The confined concrete capacity of RC column is compared with the capacity obtained as per IS 456:2000. The capacity found using confined concrete model is higher than that obtained using IS 456:2000. The enhanced strength in confined RC column remains unutilized and the behavior of RC column under loading is altered from the expected behavior. Many a times the reserved strength builds up the overconfidence amongst the stake holders who are associated with building construction work.
