Abstract

The lifetime prediction by the crack growth power law is examined and some related problems in this field are discussed. Experiments on the creep, stress relaxation, strength degradation with loading time, and the load–lifetime relation of HP-Si 3N 4/TiC at 1200°C were performed. A strength degradation model for fracture prediction is presented. The experimental results agree with theoretical prediction very well. It is revealed that the failure of ceramics results from strength degradation, but the strength degradation can be caused not only by crack growth but also by creep damage and environmental corrosion.
