Abstract

It is proposed to install a single loading arm on an existing jetty berth with a provision for two more additional arms in the future. As an alternative to major modifications to the existing deck slab, strength assessment of the slab has been performed. Steel grillage spreader has been used to spread the loading arm loads. The applied force/moment distribution in the slab has been determined by using finite element analysis. The results thus obtained have been compared with the strength of the existing slab obtained by using BS 8110. This comparison indicated that the existing deck slab has reserve capacity to carry the loads from a single loading arm and may require minor modification for three (3) loading arms, thus saving considerable construction time and cost as opposed to major modifications.
