Abstract

ABSTRACTThe audiovisual recordings of radio and television have the potential to help us understand our past. The broadcast media have slowly gained a cultural recognition that has placed a new significance on their expanding archive collections. Broadcast libraries and archives were established to facilitate the programme making. Historians, cultural commentators and the public are increasingly seeking access to these collections. RTÉ, the Irish national broadcaster, has begun to make items from its archive collections available online. This type of online exhibition presents a number of challenges for the broadcaster but may be a way to help address the growth in demand for access.
