Abstract

The breakdown characteristics of transformer oil differ for different streamer modes. This paper conducts the impulse breakdown tests of mineral oil gap, and the breakdown characteristics of the mineral oil for fast and slow streamer mode are obtained. The standard lighting impulse is used in the test and the breakdown voltage, breakdown time and streamer propagation time are measured for the 10mm, 20mm and 30mm needle-plate gaps respectively. The average velocities of streamer propagation and the volt-time characteristic are obtained. The test results show that streamer propagation velocities are strongly correlated with the volt-time characteristics of the mineral oil gap. The volt-time characteristics are mutated between the slow and the fast streamers. The corresponding voltage of the mutation process is the acceleration voltage.1
