Abstract

The optimum size of power plant and the resulting cost of power using two residuefuels was determined for a location in western Canada. The optimum size for a straw powerplant was determined to be 450MW. At this size the cost of power is $49.63 / MWh (year 2003US$). The optimum size of a forest harvest residues plant was determined to be 128 MW with apower cost of $63.82 / MWh. Straw fired power is less costly than power from forest harvestresidues because of the higher gross yield of straw. Straw is an economical power plant fuel ifcarbon credits reach a level of $4.75 to $14.75 per tonne of CO2. Two barriers to realizingstraw-based power are reliability of supply and uncertainties about ash corrosion and slagging.
