He has served as chairman of the German Dept. at the Univ. of Wisconsin and of the Linguistics Dept. at Brown Univ. He has been a Fulbright Lecturer in Egypt and the Philippines and a consultant on teaching English in Japan and Turkey. He was president of the Linguistic Society and a member of the MLA Executive Council. He is the author of numerous articles and monographs and has collaborated on a student's edition of Faust and on high-school and college textbooks.
