Abstract

THE occurrence of anomalous stratospheric winds at La verton (37° 52′ S, 144° 46′ E), Australia, in the late winter and early spring of 1969 has previously been reported by Laby and Unthank1 and Groves2. Laby and Unthank further observed that these winds were accompanied by abnormally high temperatures from 50 mbar to at least 10 mbar in the higher southern latitudes. This temperature structure is consistent with the satellite measurements made in 1969 and reported by Miller et al.3 for 30 mbar in the southern hemisphere.
