Abstract

The volcanic dust from the Mt. Agung eruption on 17 March 1963 strongly influenced the solar radiation reaching the ground, so much so that surface solar radiation measurements could be used to track the spread of the cloud over the globe. This paper outlines fairly strong circumstantial evidence that the presence of the aerosol caused increases of the stratospheric temperature of approximately 5C.
