Abstract

A model of the abundances of nitrous oxide and methane in the stratosphere has been produced using data from the Stratospheric and Mesospheric Sounder on Nimbus 7, and reported in the Handbook for Map, Vol. 31 (in press). This paper describes the data which went into the model, its limitations, and the general behaviour of methane and nitrous oxide in the middle atmosphere. Plans for preparing an improved model from new data expected from the Upper Atmosphere Research Satellite program beginning in late 1991 are outlined.
