Abstract

Summary Stratigraphic mapping methods were developed largely for sub-surface studies, but the same techniques can be used with surface data where sections of the stratigraphic unit are available over an area instead of along a relatively narrow strip. The basic maps include a structure contour map and an isopach map to show the geometry of the stratigraphic unit, and one or more contour-type facies maps that show variations in rock composition. Interpretation of the maps is commonly aided by trend surface analysis that removes local fluctuations from the data and permits clearer examinations of the broad patterns of areal variation.
