Abstract
The paper highlights the meaning and importance of strategic management of road safety, and then shows Serbia's experiences in strategic management of road safety. The contents of the first National Road Safety Strategy and the National Action Plan are described, as well as the problems of their implementation. It was particularly pointed out that there was no monitoring of the implementation of measures and the achievement of the goals defined by the strategy and action plan. Since none of the goals of the first traffic safety strategy was achieved, and there was no accountability for this failure, the second national strategy and action plan devoted much more attention to the precise and detailed description of measures and activities, monitoring of implementation, monitoring of the achievement of goals, regular reporting and responsibilities. By adopting the second national strategy and action plan for road safety, good preconditions were created for the successful implementation of well-defined measures and activities, as well as for the adoption of high-quality local strategic documents in road safety. However, sincere and consistent, publicly expressed and often repeated political support will be the most important prerequisite for full commitment and success in the implementation of these documents and the achievement of ambitious goals in the coming period.
