Abstract

This article reports the security system at University of Lagos Main Library. Available records at the University librarian's office and porters’ served as the primary source of information. Observation method and two sets of questionnaires were also used to gather data. It was discovered that, though the electronic detector machine has significantly assisted in detecting theft cases, the major constraint is the irregular electricity supply and poor maintenance of the detective machine, which hitherto sometimes prevents the machine from working perfectly. The article recommends bodily search of all library users to complement the electronic system. Photographs of anybody caught stealing library materials should be taken and displayed conspicuously at the library entrance. A porter should be stationed on patrol in the reading rooms to prevent mutilation and other library crimes.
