Abstract

In Reply.— Several investigators1-7 have shown that in premature infants and newborns hyperkalemia is associated with unacceptably high morbidity and mortality due to cardiac arrhythmias. These arrhythmias can occur at potassium levels below the high critical limit for newborns (see Figure). Critical limits were obtained from two independent surveys of 55 children's hospitals.8 and 134 US medical centers.9 Mean high critical limits for newborns were 7.8 ± 0.5 mmol/L at children's hospitals8 and 7.7 ± 0.7 mmol/L at US medical centers.9
