Abstract

A study of the behaviour of human experts in the field of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) qualitative analysis has been undertaken to determine the strategies used. A two-stage interview process was performed, which investigated the experts' ability to interpret unknown spectra using reference tables, and their ability to recognise common spectra without recourse to scaling or scanning information. The strengths and weaknesses of the strategies employed are discussed, along with their applicability to the automated interpretation of XRF spectra.
