Abstract
In this review, the numerous possibilities for the synthesis of chiral hydroxy phosphines representing a class of unique ligands and ligand precursors for homogeneous asymmetric catalysis are discussed. Different approaches for the generation of hydroxy phosphines such as "chiral pool" syntheses, reactions employing chiral auxiliaries and ring-opening reactions are considered. Particular attention is drawn to the temporary protection of hydroxy and phosphine groups necessary during several synthetic sequences. Subsequently, transformations of the title compounds will be presented, including reactions with transition metals. In distinguished examples, scope and limitation of the ligands in asymmetric catalysis are briefly discussed.
