Abstract

Abstract This chapter analyses tourism development and policies in Argentina from an economic perspective. Recognizing that Argentina's geographical position (located away from the rest of the world and from the main outbound travel markets) produces social and economic uncertainty in the country's tourism development, the chapter focuses on tourism strategies that will stimulate regional economic growth and generate jobs while at the same time ensuring their equitable distribution throughout the country. Based on literature related to regional development and tourism dispersal, this chapter describes the current Argentine national and regional scenarios, discusses tourism policies at both national and regional/provincial levels and addresses tourism distribution from the demand and supply sides. It is argued that there are several potentialities and opportunities for a better distribution of tourism benefits for several regions of the country and that specific tourism dispersal policies and strategies at the national level can have a highly positive impact to attract visitors and benefit from tourism.
