Abstract

The member states of the World Health Organization (WHO) have agreed to make the year 2000 a crucial goal for the improvement of social standards. A most important aspect of this project is primary health care. This includes the promotion of proper nutrition, the development of adequate housing, safe water and basic sanitation, health education, and the provision of appropriate drug treatment for locally common diseases and injuries. One of the main problems facing such a programme is the existing over-centralization and specialization of city clinics and contrasting lack of proper health care facilities in the rural areas of the majority of developing countries. This is particularly true for psychiatric medicine in most developing countries. These problems, and some possible solutions to them, are the subject of this present article which deals with progress currently being made in the integration of mental health care needs and primary health care strategies in Africa.
