STRATEGIES AND TACTICS USED IN SIMULTANEOUS INTERPRETING

Abstract

The problems that arise during simultaneous interpreting have attracted great interest of researchers in recent decades. Identifying emerging difficulties and finding answers to questions about how to make simultaneous interpreting better will help to avoid many mistakes. This article discusses strategies and tactics in simultaneous interpreting, interpreting modes and modalities, studies the history of simultaneous interpreting, highlights cognitive challenges in simultaneous interpreting, as well as errors resulting from cognitive problems, including improper management of attention resources, increased requirements for processing performance of received information and short information signals with a little redundancy. The study is based on the “Effort Model” in simultaneous translation, developed by D. Gile, which includes the reception effort, the production effort, the memory effort and the coordination effort. Among the proposed tactics and strategies, there are preparation strategies, online tactics, collaborative tactics and individual tactics.
