Abstract

This study is concerned with face-to-face interaction; the way participants enter into and organize their verbal interaction to meet the desired goals is the subject ofanalysis. Participants in the interaction exhibit striking similarities in the pattern of their participation and strategies despite their different ethnic back· ground. Their common Malaysian culture appears to be the factor that transcends this ethnic Variation. This is clearly illustrated in the style adoptedfor opinion giving. Strategie communication and linguistic choices in the expression of agreement and the Provision of support need to be viewed from a joint and collective perspective. Also noteworthy in this respect are the attempts to Upgrade and reinforce through repetition, if necessary, the suggestions and opinions of others in the group.
