Abstract
Merapi eruption in 2010 is very great impact on sectors of the economy, including a dairy farm. Post the eruption of Merapi many dairy farmers who have lost their livelihood pulse, to meet the needs of households are forced to look for other sources of income. In an effort to preserve and maintain the viability of the household, there are steps they took to be categorized as a strategy to meet the needs of the household. The purpose of this research was to determine the livelihood strategies, patterns and stages and a determinant factor in the livelihood strategies of dairy farmers pre and post the 2010 eruption of Merapi. This study emphasizes the application of a single case study method. Using the concept of Gerring (2007) which divides the case in some instances. The selected case is Kepuharjo village as a single case. The single case of multiple unit cases awakened households in it. The instrument used for the collection / retrieval of data in this study are direct observation, indepth interviews and document study. Informants in this study were dairy farmers in the hamlet Kaliadem, Jambu and Petung Kepuharjo Cangkringan village, taken through snowball sampling. The results of this study indicate that household livelihood strategies of dairy farmers in the pre-eruption there are 3 that accumulation strategies, consolidation strategies and survival strategies. Base dominant strategy is a dairy farm. Post-eruption than the existing 3 strategies to grow a new strategy that option compensation strategy. Base dominant strategy remains the same, namely a dairy farm. Patterns and stages of dairy households between preand post-eruption changes, among other things: land use livestock, use of water for household and farm animals, the use of HMT, the option to immediately re-raising and activities undertaken as an effort to meet the needs of households. Determinant in the choice of household livelihood strategies include: socio-economic situation of households (consisting of household income and expenditure)
