Abstract

Bekerah Village is one of the villages that experienced relocation due to the eruption of Mount Sinabung. This population relocation is expected to improve the welfare of the community after the disaster. However, various impacts have occurred on the lives of the Bekerah village community, including decreasing farmers' income because the area of ??land managed for agricultural activities is getting smaller, production prices and demand for agricultural products have decreased, difficulties in marketing agricultural products, lack of government subsidized fertilizers, and difficulty in marketing agricultural products. find free public transportation. From these impacts, the Bekerah village community has to do various ways to survive in the relocation area. The purpose of this study was to determine the survival strategy of the Bekerah village community victims of the eruption of Mount Sinabung in the relocation of the Karo Regency Settlement. This study uses a descriptive research method with a qualitative approach. Data collection is done by literature study, observation, interviews and documentation. The results showed that there were three survival strategies carried out by the Bekerah village community after being relocated, namely: An active strategy was carried out by involving family members and diversifying work by becoming a public transport driver. The passive strategy is carried out by saving and reducing expenses in meeting food and clothing needs by eating modestly such as consuming instant noodles, tofu, tempeh and eggs, not buying new clothes. In addition, the Bekerah village community also reduces social activities and sets aside a portion of the income they earn for savings. The network strategy is carried out by owing to agents, family and friends when there are urgent conditions that need money. In addition, farmers also take advantage of various government assistance such as farmer funds to meet their daily needs.
