Abstract
soap operas, and appearing in movies or the regional theatre is not the same as what scholars need to understand these genres within their specific historical and cultural contexts. Nor is the training needed to produce art the same as what is needed to work in the entertainment industry. Recognizing these differences is not snobbery or a betrayal of democracy, but a step toward mutual respect and diversity. Scholarship can be encompassing or comparative; professional training needs to be specific. The scholar's job is to understand the relationships among a broad range of phenomena; the professional's job is to accomplish specific tasks within specific genres of performance. The work of colleges and universities is to provide suitably varied curriculums to accomplish these very different options.
