Abstract

Formulas for strains and stresses on planes oblique to direction of principal stresses are developed in this paper. The thesis is offered that stresses are limited to tensile and compressive stresses; that shearing stress and shearing strength are misnomers; that shear is resisted by simple diagonal tensile and compressive stresses; that ruptures or failures occur when material is overstressed in tension; and that all failures in the field of engineering structures (except where plastic flow is classed as a failure) are tensile failures.
