Abstract

Presented here is a strain-space soil constitutive model that is capable of reproducing the behaviour of both normally consolidated and overconsolidated dry and wet clays under conditions of both drained and undrained loading, and both monotonic and cyclic loading. It appears to be capable of reproducing most of the major features of triaxial test data, including hysteretic behavior and degradation during repeated cyclic loading. The model uses 5 constants, of which 3 can be directly obtained from consolidation and triaxial test data. The model can be generalized to general stress-strain states and applied to the solution of engineering problems. The simplicity of the model, its adptability to numerical methods, and its ability to handle dynamic behavior makes it potentially useful for a large class of soil dynamics problems.
