Abstract

ABSTRACTBased on experimental study correlations between change in electrical resistance and properties of concrete are reported in this paper. This study is performed on concrete cubes of 100mm size containing carbon fibres in different dosages (0, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2%) by mass of cement. Concrete cubes were subjected to strain-sensing and damage-sensing tests. Strain-sensing test is conducted within elastic range and the correlation is obtained between change in electrical resistance and strength of concrete. From test results, it is found that concrete specimens containing carbon fibres 1.5% produces better strain and damage-sensing characteristics and can be correlated to stress strain curve of concrete. On the basis of experimental results, it is rationally explored in this study that concrete containing micro carbon fibres induce self-sensing property in it and therefore can be effectively used for health monitoring of concrete structures.
