Abstract

Hypothesis: Frequent complications in patients with severe coronary artery disease (CAD) are arrhythmias, thrombo-embolic events and heart failure. In all these problems left atrial function is of primordial importance. Methods: Echocardiographic exploration including strain imaging was performed in 330 patients, equally divided in 2 groups with comparable age, heart rate and performance capacity: I normal controls and II: patients with CAD treated with stent implantation or surgical myocardial revascularization For the contractile function of the left atrium we assessed by means of strain measurements the reservoir function (RF), the conduit function (CF) and the booster pump function (BPF) at the atrial free wall, at the roof and at the interatrial septum.
