Abstract

The hydrodynamic analogy is used to analyze the strain energy associated with screw dislocation arrays. The dislocation strain energy is shown to be mathematically identical to the kinetic energy of flow in hydrodynamics. Formulas are developed for calculating strain energy density and strain energy from the complex stress and potential functions, respectively. The theory is applied to single dislocation pileups in both infinite and finite media, and to dislocations upon two parallel glide planes in an infinite medium.
