Abstract

1. Plastic strains are a measure of diffuse fatigue damage at the stage of fatiguecrack initiation. This stage concludes with the formation of a macrocrack, which leads to final fracture. 2. The cyclic-strain curves of the investigated materials in torsion and tension-compression are closest in the coordinates of octahedral shear stress versus octahedral shear strain. 3. The level of plastic strain per cycle at the stabilization stage can be taken as a criterion of fatigue-crack initiation which is independent of the type of stress state. 4. The amount of total octahedral shear strain may serve as a criterion of final fracture which allows for the type of stress state for the materials studied here.
