Abstract

AbstractThe purpose of this community education program on homosexuality was to provide an opportunity for increased awareness about human sexuality in general and sexual orientation in particular. The methods utilized included presentations in schools and colleges, community groups, and religious organizations by a husband-wife team. Programs often were a combination of lecture/discussion, values clarification exercises, and/or films. The conclusion emphasizes the value of addressing the very sensitive issue of sexual orientation in this manner. Individuals exposed to factual material counteracting widespread misinformation, and who participate in the inevitable follow-up discussions, often begin to develop their first real understanding of these issues. Values do not necessarily change in this regard, but irrational fears do seem supplanted by a healthier acceptance and greater comfort level.
