Abstract

Solutions of triethyl aluminium (TEA), diethyl aluminium (DEA) chloride and naphthalene as well as mixtures of TEA+naphthalene and DEA chloride+naphthalene in diethyl ether were studied by pulse radiolysis. The transients formed from triethyl aluminium have a total absorption spectrum from 220 to 340 nm. They disappear according to mixed-order kinetics. The spectra of R 2Al-species produced from diethyl aluminium chloride show two peaks (at 240 and 320 nm) which decay by second-order kinetics. The spectra and kinetic data of the naphthalene radical anion (C 10H 8 −; maxima at 330 and 370 nm) and of the hydronaphthyl radical (C 10H 8, maxima at 300, 307, 320 nm) were also obtained. Registrating the total absorption spectrum of the triethyl aluminium-naphthalene-ether system at various times after the pulse led to the observation of a new maximum at 312 nm.
