Abstract

Feeding from the outcomes obtained after performing a risk analysis based on historical data to prevent cargo ignition on Ro-Ro, Ro-Pax and Car-Carrier ships, this paper describes the foundation for the development of a tool supporting fire risk management during the cargo distribution stage of the stowage process. There, cargo other than dangerous goods are loaded without consideration to the hazards they may involve, leaving room for improvements from the ignition prevention perspective. An approach to both design and specification is presented, aiming to manage all the optimization actions needed to obtain the best placement of cargo units, understanding best as the combination that minimizes the overall risk of fire. This way, a description of inputs being used and some constraints taken into consideration together with an explanation about how the tool can interact with existing software of operators are included.
