Abstract

University psychiatry does not always pay attention to more rustic and maritime aspects of psychiatry. In the North Atlantic area fear of nature's forces may be seen as a part of transcultural knowledge. On the Faroe Islands phobia of winter storms is well known. The phenomenon is illustrated by some cases, and some treatment possibilities are outlined.
