Abstract

ESRO 4 data are used to show that storm-associated changes in the neutral gas composition may extend well beyond the region of auroral heating. It is also shown that these changes cannot be interpreted as a temperature effect. It is concluded that negative ionospheric storms at middle latitudes are well explained by the observed composition changes and that the numerical modeling of thermospheric storm effects in this region requires further study.
