Abstract

Abstract Story and myth are determining factors in the life of each individual. Understanding one's story as a pattern by which one is guided to act allows a person to begin to change and to grow. The work of Jean Houston demonstrates a process by which the individual's role in the larger realm is experienced and integrated. Houston draws on stories of mythic origin, or of mythic proportions, from around the world and directs ritual enactments in which all members of a group can perceive themselves as participants in a larger cosmic story. Individuals learn to honor the sacred quality of their own stories, and to understand and work with their fluidity.
