Abstract

Two mixed hyperalimentation solutions (4.25% crystalline amino acid solutions in 25% dextrose and 5% casein hydrolysate in 25% dextrose) were analyzed for chemical stability after storage at room and refrigerated temperatures for 14 days, and the microbial growth supporting potential of various hyperalimentation solutions was assessed. Both of the solutions tested chemically darkened slightly at room temperature, but no significant changes in dextrose, amino acid or total nitrogen content, titratable acidity or pH were noted after two weeks. Of five organisms tested, only Candida albicans underwent appreciable growth in solutions of 5% casein hydrolysate in 25% dextrose (in 24 hours) and in 4.25% crystalline amino acid solution in 25% dextrose (in 48 hours). Although the mixed hyperalimentation solutions tested can probably be left safely at room temperature for 12 hours, they should be refrigerated until used.
