Abstract

Two microcomputer digital speech storage and retrieval systems were designed and evaluated in a computer-assisted instruction environment. An 8-bit Z80 microprocessor was used for logic control with storage of programs, text files and digitized speech on hard disk. Speech sampling rates of 10 and 12.5 kHz were utilized for digital 8-bit (256 amplitude levels) speech storage and reconstruction. Speech phrase lengths varied from 2 to 20 s.
