Perhaps the biggest challenges facing the continued use of sheet moulding compound (SMC) in automotive body panels is the occurrence of paint defects (or ‘paint pops’ as they are often known). Amanda Jacob investigates some of the techniques being developed to overcome this problem, including ‘tougher’ resins and improved primer/sealers.
