Abstract
Generalised convulsive status epilepticus (GCSE) is a medical emergency. The mortality in patients with GCSE admitted to an intensive care unit is about 5-10%. If figures for the USA can be applied to the UK, about 30,000 episodes of status epilepticus occur here each year. In this article we discuss the management of GCSE, concentrating on ways of stopping an episode.
