Abstract

Stopping powers of Au have been measured for 11–26 MeV oxygen ions. The absolute accuracy is ±1.5%. The results agree well with previous experimental values within their stated uncertainties. Effective charges are deduced from the present results with two different methods. One assumes a Z12-dependence of electronic stopping power and the other analyses measured stopping powers with the Bethe-Bloch formula. Effective charges derived with the latter method are compared with those obtained by Anthony and Lanford and average equilibrium charges in solids given by an empirical formula of Shima et al.
