Abstract

Stopping powers of carbon for 2.0–6.5 MeV 12C and 11–37 MeV 197Au ions, aluminium for 4–10 MeV 27Al and 12–37 MeV 197Au ions, and copper for 4–16 MeV 63Cu and 12–37 MeV 197Au ions were measured. These stopping powers are needed in ERDA analyses of C, Al and Cu, when MeV energy 197Au ions are used as primaries. Stopping powers were obtained by measuring energy losses of ions in thin foils, using scattering from a tantalum target and recoil atoms from an aluminium target. The final energy of the scattered and recoiled particles was measured with the time-of-flight method employing a standard TOF-ERDA spectrometer. A linear stopping power as a function of energy and a correction factor to the TRIM-95 stopping power were fitted to the experimental data.
