Abstract

The aim of the present paper is to investigate the surface waves in an inhomogeneous orthotropic elastic medium, under the influence of gravity field. The theory of generalized surface waves has firstly been developed and then it has been employed to investigate particular cases of waves, viz. Rayleigh and Stoneley waves under the influence of gravity. The wave velocity equation has been obtained. The wave velocity is calculated as a function of the frequency. The results indicate that the effect of orthotropy on such waves is small and can be neglected, while the effect of inhomogeneity is very pronounced.
