Abstract

Henry M. Stommell, 1982 AGU Bowie Medalist, is a recipient of the 1989 National Medal of Science. One of 19 recipients of the award, Stommell was cited for “original and penetrating observations of the circulation of the oceans,” and President Bush recently presented the award at White House Ceremonies.A graduate of Yale University, New Haven, Conn., with a degree in physics, Stommel currently is a senior scientist in the Physical Oceanography Department, Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, Woods Hole, Mass. The general circulation of the oceans, the Gulf Stream, the Kuroshio current off Japan, eddy dynamics, equatorial currents, deep water convection, planetary flow patterns, historical data, climate, the Indian Ocean and the monsoons are his research interests.
